Plan your moped tour

Tips for your unforgettable road trip
Plan the route and duration of the motorbike tour
If you want to visit certain places during your moped tour and it is a moped tour that will last several days, it makes sense to plan the route in advance. You can do this in the traditional way, but you can also use an interactive route planner. It should be noted that it can quickly become uncomfortable to spend more than 5 or 6 hours a day in the saddle, because at some point your buttocks and back will make themselves felt. Assuming an average speed of 20 to 25 km/h, a distance of between 100 and 120 kilometres per day is realistic. At least if you don't want your motorbike tour to turn into physical torture after just a few days and you want to arrive at your destination relaxed. On one-day motorbike tours, on the other hand, the riding time can be extended by a few hours - after all, you can recover from the exertions afterwards.

You can now plan your daily route according to this distance. This should of course consist of country roads. Because even if some tuned bikes are perfectly capable of riding at high speeds on the motorway, mopeds are generally not permitted there. It is also best to plan your motorbike tour in such a way that you do not have to ride on roads with gradients that your vehicles cannot cope with. The daily route for a motorbike tour lasting several days should be chosen so that you can reach the overnight accommodation without stress at the end of the day's tour, for example a campsite or hotel.

Essential: the moped check before motorbike tours
Even though something can always happen on the road, you should check your moped thoroughly before every moped tour. This will reduce the likelihood of a breakdown, at least in theory, and rule out frequent problems from the outset. Before setting off, you should always check the entire lighting system, the proper functioning of the brakes and gears, the condition of the tyres and the tyre pressure on your moped. Also make sure that the ignition is working properly and, if necessary, adjust it again before the moped tour. Even after a thorough check, it makes sense to take at least a basic tool kit with you, especially on extended tours. For example, a pair of combination pliers, a small ratchet including a frequently used socket spanner and perhaps a spark plug spanner are useful.
A small selection of repair materials also makes sense on a tour with the moped. These include, for example, repair kit or tyre repair spray, sealing tape or sealant, spare bulbs and repair tape. After all, you never know what might happen on the road. You should also always carry some 2-stroke oil for lubrication. And in the event of a breakdown that you can't fix yourself, you should always have the number of a breakdown service with you. Of course, this is only useful if you can also make a phone call - so don't forget your mobile phone and charger.

Where to put the luggage on the motorbike tour? And what do you actually need to take with you?
Particularly on motorbike tours lasting several days, the amount of luggage quickly takes on dimensions that require plenty of storage space. This quickly exceeds the load capacity that a conventional luggage rack can accommodate. But where to put all the tools, clothes and all the other stuff you need to take with you on a moped tour? A rucksack is practical, but not recommended on a moped tour. However, if you don't want to do without it, you should only carry light items in it. Saddlebags offer you much more storage space, are easy to mount on your moped and don't put any strain on your back while riding.

Furthermore, saddlebags allow you to distribute the additional weight evenly on both sides. If you really need or want to take a lot of luggage with you, you can use a moped trailer in addition to the luggage rack and saddlebags - but only with a suitable trailer coupling, of course.
The packing list for your motorbike tour: what you should definitely take with you
What the packing list for your motorbike tour should look like naturally depends more or less on your personal needs when you are out and about on a motorbike. It also depends on the load capacity available to you on the luggage rack, in the saddlebags and in an optional trailer. You should have the tools and repair materials already listed with you even for one-day tours. For longer motorbike tours, however, there are numerous other things that should be on your packing list.

Clothing and hygiene
A basic hygiene kit including shower gel, toothpaste and toothbrush as well as a towel should not be missing. It's also best to pack a hand-washing paste for cleaning up after repairs. Don't forget toilet paper and deodorant - in case you don't have a shower for a while. Sufficient clothing and a change of underwear and, of course, preferably rainwear, in case the weather forecast is not right again, should also be included in your luggage. Tip: On long tours, you can also wash your clothes at a local launderette.

First-aid kit
Your first-aid kit for the motorbike tour should include at least one painkiller, a burn ointment, an antibacterial ointment as well as sunscreen and insect repellent and small plasters and bandages.

Camping equipment
If you are planning to spend the night on a campsite, it makes sense to take camping utensils and washing-up liquid with you, possibly also a cooker and airtight bags for food. Of course, you will also need a tent and at least a sleeping bag. A torch is also indispensable on any motorbike tour.

Papers
Very important: check the contents of your wallet before every motorbike tour. In addition to an ID card or passport, you should always have your moped's operating licence, driving licence and insurance card with you. The packing list for important papers should also include your insurance papers for the moped and a bank or credit card.

What else is important to you on your moped tour depends very much on your personal needs. But if you stick to this rough overview, you should be able to get through longer moped tours without any major problems. And last but not least: If you are planning a moped tour with several friends, not everyone needs to take everything with them. This applies in particular to tools and repair materials. Discuss things thoroughly beforehand and divide the required items between you. This way you can help each other out if necessary.
